New Zealand
New Zealand er lidt større end England. Landet består af to store øer, kaldet Nordøen og Sydøen. Fra nordspidsen af Nordøen til sydspidsen af Sydøen er der 1600 kilometer. Landet ligger mellem 30 og 50 grader sydlig bredde, dvs. det ligger ret langt mod Sydpolen. Danmark ligger omkring 56 grader nordlig bredde, som er endnu tættere på den nordlige pol. New Zealand og Danmark ligger næsten præcis på hver sin side af kloden. Hvis man sætter sin finger ved Danmark på en globus, og en anden finger ved New Zealand, kan man holde globussen.
Årstiderne
New Zealand ligger på den sydlige halvkugle af Jorden, i modsætning til Danmark, der ligger på den nordlige halvkugle. Det giver nogle lidt mærkelige effekter. F.eks har de på New Zealand vinter, når vi har sommer, og omvendt. Som du kan se på billedet herunder skyldes det at Jorden hælder lidt i forhold til Solen. Når Jorden svæver rundt om Solen går der et helt år før den har nået hele vejen rundt. Det ene halvår er Nordpolen tættest på Solen, den nordlige halvkugle får mest varme, og derfor er der forår og sommer der. Det næste halvår er Sydpolen tættest på Solen, og så er det den sydlige halvkugles tur til at have forår og sommer.
New Zealands dannelse New Zealand er dannet ved, at to kontinentalplader støder sammen lige på det sted. Når to plader støder sammen, sker der mange voldsomme ting, vulkaner og bjerge dannes, og voldsomme jordskælv sker. På New Zealand er der dannet en masse vulkaner. De har ligget der i mange millioner af år og udspyet lava og aske, som til sidst har ligget i så mange lag, at de to øer dukkede op af havet. Specielt på Nordøen findes stadigvæk rigtigt mange vulkaner.
